Movies for Medievalists
New Additions to the List:
Andrei Rublev (the Andrei Tarkovsky masterpiece about the eponymous Russian icon painter and the casting of a great bell that becomes a test of faith more so than metallurgy)
Camelot (medieval Broadway, captured on film)
First Knight (everything is pretty visually--including Richard Gere--but it feels off-kilter, as though the director got his idea of the Middle Ages from visiting Excalibur in Las Vegas and deciding to play it straight)
Ivanhoe (Elizabeth Taylor--as an exquisite and selfless "Jewess"--gets short shrift in love from the Christian Ivanhoe--Robert Taylor--who prefers the sexy Saxon Joan Fontaine; shades of Scarlett and Melanie!)
Jabberwocky (a few Python folk fooling around with knights, dragons, and Lewis Carroll)
The List continues:
The Lion in Winter (it may not be good history but the acting of Katherine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole is fabulous; and don't forget then-new-to-the-screen Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton)
The Adventures of Robin Hood (Errol Flynn putting all sorts of fun INTO the Middle Ages)
The Seventh Seal (Director Ingmar Bergman taking all the fun OUT of the Middle Ages)
Becket (a classic favorite with the youthful young lions: Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton)
The Sword in the Stone (the charming Disney cartoon version)
Krull (a fantasy version of the Middle Ages on an Earth-like planet, and one of my all-time-favorite, guilty-pleasure movies)
The Adventures of Robin Hood (Errol Flynn putting all sorts of fun INTO the Middle Ages)
The Seventh Seal (Director Ingmar Bergman taking all the fun OUT of the Middle Ages)

Anchoress (saw this up at the Kalamazoo movie night and was impressed; one of the almost dying breed of current movies shot in black and white)
Excalibur (not a great movie, but bits and pieces are amazingly evocative and Nicol Williamson as a robust and not-so-old Merlin is fun to watch)
Flesh and Blood (another guilty pleasure; Rutger Hauer is one of my favorite faux-medieval actors; my feminist soul shudders at the politically incorrect plotline, but the mayhem must appeal to some past-life fan experience in the Colisseum)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (the 1938 Charles Laughton version; not to be confused with the frothy Disney version or the excellent silent version with Lon Chaney; fyi: I have NEVER seen Quasimodo on campus, except for a few glimpses on football weekends)
Dragonheart (fun with dragons, including the voice of Sean Connery--another favorite faux-medieval actor)
Joan of Arc (with Ingrid Bergman, imho the most beautiful woman who ever lived; the movie is more a tribute to Bergman's beauty than to cinematic art)
